A “Stand-Alone” Palace-Fortress

Below you will see one of our latest YouTube Bible teachings. I want to take you to one of the palace-fortresses of Herod the Great called Masada. Located on the edge of the Judean Desert and close to the western shoreline of the Dead Sea, this fortress rises about 1,000 feet. David probably used this “stand-alone” mountain as a pale of refuge himself (1 Samuel 24). But it was Herod the Great who developed it. He built walls, storage rooms, palaces, and cisterns.

The Story of Masada

About 100 years after Herod the Great built this fortress, 967 Jews found refuge on top of Masada. Between 70 AD (after the Jerusalem Temple was destroyed) until sometime around 73 AD, these brave Jewish families withstood the Romans. It is a story shared in detail by Josephus, the Jewish historian writing for the Romans. The 1981 Hollywood movie is way too long and boring, but at least the story is represented. It is simply called Masada.
 
This video teaching (and the next few dozen or so) is one of many where we take you to actual biblical sites. You will walk through these sites with me.
