An encouraging word from Joshua 6
Biblical Israel Ministries & Tours (BIMT) is all about teaching the Bible in the context of the land of Israel and other biblical countries (Jordan, Egypt, Turkey, Greece, and Italy). We teach the historical geography of the Bible as well as archaeology, customs and culture of the land. We aim to make connections between the Bible and the land in all that we do.
This is another session in the new series of teaching videos called “Devotions from Israel.” This brief five-minute devotional comes from Joshua 6. This story from the Bible takes us to ancient Jericho where the walls came “tumbling down.”
About the Devotional
One of the best-known stories from the Old Testament is the conquering of the Canaanite city of Jericho. The story is recorded in Joshua 6. It is an amazing story of how God led the Israelites to take the city in a very unconventional way.
Jericho is located in the southern end of the Jordan Valley. Situated just north of the Dead Sea and east of the edge of the Judean Desert, Jericho was a small but well fortified city in the Late Bronze Period. Visiting the site today is sometimes disappointing to some because the site has not been well maintained archaeologically. However, at the southern end of the site one can see a stone retaining wall. On top of this wall was a mud-brick wall. According to the story, after encircling the city seven times and with the blowing of the shofar, the walls collapsed and the city was taken. God’s way of securing victory from the Canaanites was incredible! Jericho was the first of 31 cities (Joshua 12) that would be taken.
