An encouraging word from Joshua 1

Biblical Israel Ministries & Tours (BIMT) is all about teaching the Bible in the context of the land of Israel and other biblical countries (Jordan, Egypt, Turkey, Greece, and Italy). We teach the historical geography of the Bible as well as archaeology, customs and culture of the land. We aim to make connections between  the Bible and the land in all that we do.

This is another session in the new series of teaching videos called “Devotions from Israel.” This brief five-minute devotional comes from Joshua 1. This story is about Joshua and the words of encouragement he shared with the Israelites as they crossed the Jordan River into Canaan.

About the Devotional

Moses was Israel’s leader for the previous 40 years. Now somewhere on top of Mt. Nebo, Moses died (Deuteronomy 34). Before his death, Moses had been preparing Joshua for leadership. Now in this transition of leadership, it was Joshua’s turn to encourage the 2nd generation of Israelites to cross the Jordan River into Canaan. They were crossing into unknown territory.

Before this crossing, Joshua encouraged his people with similar words Moses had shared previously with him (Deuteronomy 31). These words would help guide the Israelites throughout the task of conquering the land. Starting with conquering the small but well-fortified city of Jericho, a total of 31 Canaanite cities would be eventually taken (Joshua 12).

“God guides His people in the transitions of life. It requires trusting in Him, even when our journey takes us into unknown destinations. When we trust in God, we can know His peace and joy!”

Mt. Nebo
Here are Joshua’s words:

Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:7-9)

Trusting in God in the transitions of life is the key to experiencing God’s leading into the unknown. Trusting leads to knowing God’s peace and joy in the journey of life.

I hope you enjoy this video below. These five minute devotionals will be produced on a regular basis. We will try to share two devotionals per week this summer. As you are encouraged by the video, please consider sharing this post with others for their encouragement as well.
